If you are into vintage hair and makeup you’ve probably heard of Youtube personality Cherry Dollface. Not only is she an amazing vintage/pinup beauty blogger, but she’s also been hosting workshops internationally for the past few years. She also teams up with local photographers to do your hair and makeup for your very own pinup photoshoot.
I’ve had the opportunity to attend her workshops a couple of times and told myself if she’s ever in town again I’m going to do a photo shoot with her. It was in February I heard that she would be coming back to Tulsa in October, my birthday month!
So, as a birthday present to myself I signed up for a birthday pinup shoot with Cherry Dollface and Liz Huckleby photography.
Weightloss Goals
With the photo shoot scheduled for October, I was determined to lose weight before then. This determination lead me on my weight loss journey and I’m happy to say that I managed to lose almost 30 pounds between February and October of this year.
I didn’t go on any crazy diet, just watched what I ate, and added daily exercise of 30 minutes or more to my morning routine. I would also say that I lost a lot of weight over summer, laying pavers for my garden and digging out full flower beds.
Birthday Dress
From the very beginning, I knew that I wanted to make my own dress for the photoshoot. I wanted to make a dress that I thought would represent me.
If you are a fan of Akram’s Ideas you know that my background colors happen to be green with white polka dots. As it so happens, I also had some green and white polka dot fabric in my stash..
I also wanted to make, a vintage or vintage-inspired dress. I used Pinterest to pin ideas but in the end, I decided to make the Sew Over It Vintage Shirtdress and add piping details.
Sleeve Refashion
I had made the Vintage Shirtdress before but since that time I had lost weight. So I went from a size 18 down to a size 14.
I whipped up the dress and it fit perfectly everywhere…. But the sleeves. I’ve got big arms and should have measured the sleeves but didn’t even think of it until it was too late.
With such a limited amount of fabric I ended up using all the fabric for the dress, I also had increased the sleeves to a long sleeve. So, with no more fabric and way too tight sleeves I was in a bit of a panic the night before the photoshoot.
The morning before the shoot I got up early and ripped off the too tight sleeves. It just so happened that I had the Caroline Pajama pattern from Closet Case patterns setting on my cutting table as I had only recently purchased it. Then I thought what If I used the short sleeve pattern for the Caroline on the dress.
It just so happen that I had just enough fabric to make the new sleeves and also add the piping accent to match the piping I already added to the rest of the dress.
Pinup Photoshoot
With the dress ready to go I headed to my photoshoot. Cherry Dollface is so personable and I had a lot of fun getting made up by her.
I also can’t say enough about Liz Huckleby, pinup photographer here locally in Tulsa. She is such a fun person and makes the photoshoot so stress-free and casual. She even came up with some super fun shots that I just love.
Overall, I had so much fun and a great time overall.
