The whole idea behind Akram’s Ideas is for me to share with the world my “creative and crazy ideas”. That is why in 2015 I hope to be creative and yes possibly crazy, too.

All joking aside I really want to create more things this year. I already talked about my lofty #VintagePledge plans the other day, but I also have some other creative plans for the year. One of these goals is to continue building my craft skills in a variety of areas.

Building your Craft Skills

In order to build my craft skills I turn to Craftsy.com. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve probably already heard of Craftsy.com. Basically they provide online video courses for craft education, everything from sewing, knitting, painting, cake decorating and more.

My Craftsy

I had already watched several of the mini-free courses that Craftsy has to offer and had learned a great deal. Some of my favorite free courses include:

Craftsy Mini Classes I've enrolled in.
Craftsy Mini Classes I’ve enrolled in.
  • The Wilton Method: Creative Cake Pops
  • Sewing Machine Feet from A to Z
  • Complete Knife Skills
  • Sew Ready: Machine Basics

I can’t believe how much I learned from these free classes alone. The Cake Pops one really helped me master some difficulties I had in the past with making Cake Pops. The Knife Skills course is also great, as it starts with the basics of which knife you need to how to place your hands with chopping. I’m hoping to follow these tips and tricks and never worry about cutting myself with a knife again.

Also, while I’ve been sewing for about 3 years now, I still am amazed how little I know about my machine and sewing feet. Both the Sewing Machine Feet and Machine Basics classes helped me build my sewing skills.

This Christmas while they were running a really great deal, I decided to add to my classes and purchase some full courses. I ended up getting the following classes:

  • Fast Track Fitting
  • Sassy Librarian Blouse
  • Project Upcycle
  • The Flirty Day Dress

I have already watched a bit from each of these courses and can’t wait to get started in taking one of these projects on.

The Fast Track Fitting course is designed to help you get a better fit from your patterns and comes with Vogue’s 1004 Fitting Shell pattern. I really hoping that this class will help me get the prefect fit and possible give me some advice for grading patterns as I often have to with vintage patterns.

The Project Upcycle course is all about taking existing garments and upcycling them into something else. I got this course because I have a lot of old t-shirts and jeans that I need to do something with. I’m hoping I can use the skills in this class to make some gifts for the holidays.

Both the Sassy Librarian Blouse and Flirty Day Dress were just fun purchases as I loved their look and feel and wanted to make these items. While I love both I think I might start with the Librarian blouse because I think I’d get the most use out of it in my wardrobe and because it seems a lot less complex than the day dress.
