At the end of April, I had the opportunity to attend the Cherry Dollface Hair and Makeup workshop in Tulsa.
Cherry Dollface is a real icon in the pinup world. Her YouTube channel features lots of hair and makeup tutorials for creating vintage and retro pinup looks.
Tulsa Pinup Group
This is my second time attending one of Cherry’s workshops here in Tulsa (You can read about last year’s event here). The workshop was once again hosted by Pinup By Liz, a local photo studio run by Liz Huckleby, internationally published pinup, boudoir, and glamour photographer based in Tulsa, OK. Liz is also a prominent member of the Tulsa Area Pinup Girls Group, who held various events throughout the year.
Practical Pinup Tips
While Cherry freely shares her hair and make-up techniques on YouTube some may ponder the benefits of spending money to watch a live workshop.
The benefit is to get your one-on-one questions answered by the source! I mentioned that this is the second time I’ve attended this workshop and even though it’s basically the same content, I still walked away having learned a lot more.
Not only is Cherry a plentiful source of information when it comes to pinup style, but the audience will also chime in and shares their experience and tips.
Skin Care
One of the big tips that I took away this time around is skin care. Cherry emphasized that makeup can only do so much and in the grand scheme of things less is more.
So, with less makeup, you need take care of your skin. A good skin routine is essential for keeping a youthful glow to your face.
Beauty Doesn’t Have to be Expensive
You don’t have to spend $100 of dollars on makeup to get that perfect pinup look. Cherry used a wide range of product lines in her workshop such as E.L.F brand cosmetics and Big Sexy Hair hair products which both can be picked up at your local drug store.
There are a lot of affordable brands that make good quality products, and of course, as Cherry pointed out if you have good healthy skin, then you don’t need a lot of makeup anyways.
The Big Tease
Cherry said that just about any vintage style can be achieved with a good tease. Start by rolling your hair the direction doesn’t matter so much as the direction you unwind the hair. After all those curls are just there to create volume for teasing.
See Cherry Live
Overall I had an excellent time at the workshop. If you ever get a chance to see Cherry’s workshops in person I totally suggest you go. She is so personable and ready to answer questions, share tips and just a real doll!
Also, I want to give thanks to Liz for hosting this event and other pinup events throughout the year. As a newer Tulsa resident, I really enjoy getting to meet new people in the vintage/pinup scene around town.
