As you might have read in the last post it was recently my niece’s Layla’s birthday. While I was busy making cupcakes for her party, I did manage to take time to make a quick dress for Layla as a gift.
Valentine Dress
Since Layla’s birthday is only a two weeks before Valentine I thought I would make her a Valentine dress for her birthday.
I had the perfect fabric in my stash that had such a Valentine feel.
While I loved the fabric, I didn’t want to give the dress too much of a fluffy Valentine dress look. Then I thought about making a shift dress and using a complementary red fabric for the bodice.
Make Do Shift Dress – McCall’s 3174
I knew that I had a vintage 1960’s child’s shift dress pattern that would be prefect for my idea. The problem was I couldn’t find it. Every since the move all my patterns are so disorganized.
After getting very frustrated I finally came across McCalls 3174 pattern. This 2001 release pattern has nice pleats and version B was the basic look that I wanted.
While the collar is cute it isn’t what I wanted for this project, so I opted to exclude it and the perfect shift dress was born.
Happy Valentine Layla
The dress was super quick and easy to make. Plus Layla looks so OMG Adorable in this dress.
Also, this is probably the first dress I made Layla that my sister actually liked. (She’s very modern in her style).
I can’t say that it’s my favorite Layla dress, but I must admit she’s totally rocking this dress.
So wonderfully sweet! I think a grownup sized dress in that fabric would be terrific, too.

Funny you should say that. I actually have just a little of the heart fabric left that I thought I’d make a similar dress for me in reverse. The bodice hearts and and the skirt red. That’s the plan anyways, but who knows when I’ll get around to making it 😉
