Homecoming ’13

This past weekend was Pittsburg State University (PSU) homecoming. The entire town of Pittsburg, Kansas participates in the festivities surrounding homecoming. The streets are covered with crimson and gold colors, from the PSU flags to shops showing their support in window dressings.

Saturday is the big day for homecoming starting with a parade down Broadway. Since I don’t live very far me and my hubby try to go every year. This year was just as fun as always. The gray skies seemed ominous at first but only a few sprinkles came down during the parade.

There was a good crowd, despite the rainy weather.

It was chilly through, only about 55 degrees at the highest, and wouldn’t you know this years parade theme was beach bikinis. There weren’t any actual bikinis in the parade but I did feel bad for some of the dance squads, they wear very short skirts, often times sleeveless, and the girls in some of the squads couldn’t be more than 6 years old, they must have been ice cubes.

Despite, the cold and sprinkles, I had a good time and enjoyed the music of PSU marching band, other surround middle and high school bands, old cars and creative floats.

The parade was a lot of fun, but after being out all morning in the chill, I was glad to get back home and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate. We we’re also really lucky that big down pour of rain didn’t happen till about 20 minutes after the parade ended.
