Sew Frosting in Gold

The sewing community we often try to focus on sewing practical things for our wardrobe that we can get the most wear out of. Think of this as cake.  But what is cake without frosting?

The idea of #sewfrosting was brought about by Heather of Closet Case Patterns and Kelli of True Bias, who this past November started a challenge for sewers to sew something fancy, a bit extravagant, and just outside of your normal wardrobe.

Now, I don’t usually follow the rule of sewing cake. Instead, I’m usually sewing fun vintage dresses which is already a bit frosting, if you ask me. So, when this challenge hit Instagram I wasn’t really feeling like participating.

Gold Holiday Dress

Then one day I was in a sewing discussion on a Facebook group where someone had shared a gold brocade fabric and wasn’t sure what to make with it.

I started thinking that gold brocade would have been popular in the 1960’s and that it would make a good dress. That thought of a gold dress stuck with me.

About the same time, I just finished my sofa slipcover (which I’ll share later on) out of gold brocade. With quite a bit left over, I decided, what the heck. I’m going to submit an entry for the #sewfrosting challenge the day before the last day of the challenge.

Megan Dress

For my gold dress, I wanted a quick make since there were only two days left to the challenge. I also really wanted to make something that had a 1960’s silhouette.  So, I decided to go with the Megan dress from the book Love at First Stitch by Tilly & the Buttons.

Having made 3 Megan dresses this summer I knew the pattern and I knew it fit me well.

The dress took no time what so ever to whip up and voila I had a very holiday appropriate gold dress.

While I probably had enough gold brocade for the dress, I thought I’d break it up a bit with some red and gold cotton at the top. Ironically this red and gold fabric was used to make throw pillows for my sofa. Meaning I’m totally in camouflage on my sofa, in this dress.

A simple #sewingMegan can be #sewfrosting, all it takes are the right fabrics and a good idea

#SewFrosting

In the end, I’m super happy that participated in the #sewfrosting challenge even though I originally wasn’t planning on it. My little gold dress is probably one of my proudest makes of the year because it’s a creative and a bit of a crazy idea that suddenly popped into my head and came out exactly as planned.

Love to know in the comments below if you participated in the #sewfrosting challenge.
