Love At First Stitch – Book Review

I recently got my copy of Love at First Stitch: Demystifying Dressmaking written by the lovely Tilly Walnes of the blog Tilly and Buttons.

I pre-ordered the book on Amazon as a birthday gift for myself, though it only just arrived the other day.

If you’ve never read Tilly’s blog, it’s a typical sewing blog with tips and tricks. However, Tilly definitely has a retro style when it comes to dressmaking.

After opening the book I swooned over all the projects. The book comes with 7 projects (patterns included) as well as variations on each. I love them all and can’t wait to make my project.

Being a graphic designer, I’m so picky about book layout and format. Happily though I love the layout of this book and the details for each tutorial.

Throughout the book there are inspirational quotes that are fun and make good use of an otherwise blank transition page. They are so nice in fact I’m tempted to scan these pages and print them off to hang in my craft room.

I was so consumed by this book, I just couldn’t take it anymore. I was on fall break so I thought, why not whip up one of these projects real quick. I was really supposed to use this time to help my hubby with the home remodel projects, so I decided to only work on the quickest project from the book. Thus, I decided to make my very own Brigitte Scarf.

I quickly gave my fabric stash a once over and decided to go with this lovely floral cotton fabric. Once I had the fabric cut according to the measurements in the book I was just about half way to completing this project.

The Brigitte Scarf is a real beginner project, nothing too difficult. You simply cut the fabric, sew a 5/8″ seam all the way around with wrong sides facing, leaving a small opening. Trim the seams, turn the scarf, press then sew up the opening.

While this project took  all of 5 minutes for me, I’d say it a really good step by step for some one who has never sew before. Overall each project in the book slowly works towards building your sewing skills, which is really great for the novice sewer.

I tried out the scarf after making it.

I can’t wait to get time to actually work on more advance projects in this book, but for now I’m happy with my new scarf.
