A Vintage Jumper Dress in Teal

Not long ago I managed to pick up a ton of vintage patterns while antiquing one weekend.

One of the patterns in this haul was vintage Simplicity 5890 a pattern for a jumper dress.

Simplicity 5890

Simplicity 5890 pattern was from the 1960’s which I’ve mentioned before is the decade I seem to get the most wear out of.

I thought the jumper dress would be a great work outfit and the green and teal colors in the cover illustration really caught my eye.

This vintage jumper dress really caught my eye

A quick look at my fabric stash and I had a near identical teal linen fabric that would be perfect for this pattern.

I wasn’t planning on making this pattern at first but after finding the perfect fabric I thought, hey this would count towards my Vintage Pledge

Vintage Resizing

As with most vintage patterns, I did have to do a bit of resizing.

This fabric was a perfect match for the cover illustration

While this pattern had the correct bust size I did have to adjust it slightly to fit a larger cup size.

After making my adjustments to the bodice I then added a few inches to the waist.

Pattern: Simplicity 5890
Version: A
Size: full bust and waist adjustments
Notes & Modification: Bias tape used to finish neckline and armholes
Recommendations: Things to keep in mind for next time
Difficulty: Skill Level Ratting:

The skirt is where things go wrong. I simply added to the skirt pattern waist and didn’t consider how the front panel seams lined up with the bodice darts.  Since I moved the darts slightly when resizing the front panel didn’t match up.

While it’s not a big issue it was enough to get me discouraged and chalked this project up as a fail.

Better Than Thought

As I said once I made this dress I was instantly unhappy with the outcome and didn’t even bother to go on with the blouse.

After a month of just hanging in my closet, I finally pulled it out to take pictures and was surprised how much I actually liked it.

It’s not my best make, but it’s definitely wearable

I’m still really mad at myself for messing up the panel alignment, it’s not as bad as I thought.

Also, I really love the color of this dress and it’s super office appropriate especially when paired with black a belt and heels.

I do really love the color

It’s not my favorite make of the year but given the time it’s turned out to be a nice work outfit.

Have you ever made a pattern you thought was a fail, then later ended up wearing a lot?
