Happy 25th Birthday Web Smiely!

The emotion icon 😉 turns 25.

According to internet the first ASCII smiley face was put into use September 1982, when Scott Fahlman, a research professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Computer Science, suggested that the : – ) symbol be used in the subject line of an online bulletin board post to denote a humorous or non-serious topic.

Today there is an array of emotion icons for describing any mood. With the advancements in connection speeds and graphics many IM users have strayed away from the text emotion icon and are using graphic smiles like yahoo’s IM mascot.

Although these graphical emotion icon maybe replacing the text based ones on the web, text messengers still make plenty use of the text ones.

However it is displayed the web smiley (and other emotions) have become a phenomenon’s, one that will last another 25 years to come.
