Disclosure: I received a copy of this pattern to review but I was not financially compensated in any way. The opinions expressed are my own and are based on my own experience working with this pattern.

I was recently contacted by Jennifer Lauren Handmade asking if I would be interested in doing a review of their latest pattern the Gable top.

50’s Flare with Gable Top

The Gable top definitely has a lot of 50’s flare, which just so happens to be my style.

This knit top features a slash neckline, a long-line body for extra comfort and three different sleeve options.

Let’s start by saying I love this shirt

The request for this pattern review couldn’t have come at a better time. I have been wanting to make more knit tops after making my t-shirt back in spring. Plus, the long sleeve version of this shirt would make for a perfect make for transitioning into fall sewing.

Gable Top Construction

The construction of this pattern couldn’t have been easier.

First off one of the things I loved about Jen’s patterns is that she gives an easy overview of what pages fit together. This makes it easy to tape up and remove pages you won’t be using. I loved that she included this, it made piecing together this PDF pattern super easy.

The instructions made piecing together the pattern easy.

Besides that the shirt is pretty much three pattern pieces, back , front and sleeve.

I choose to use a long sleeve for transitioning into fall. For the fabric I choose to use a striped white and green jersey from my stash. I’ve been wanting to make a striped jersey shirt after seeing the lovely ones that Rosabella from http://fancyfrugality.blogspot.com/ has made.

A Few Changes

The only changes I made were minor. First I cut a size 14 grading to an 18 waist. This gave me the perfect fit. I did however have to cut out  an 18 sleeve to make it around my big girl arms.

I adore the slash neckline

The last minor change was the shortening of the pattern. I’m a short girl but this pattern could have been a mini dress on me. I shortened the shirt by 4” , though I could have gone for 6”.

I shorten the length by 4 inches

The same goes for the sleeve I believe I cut like 4” off it as well. Unfortunately when it came to cutting the fabric I was a little short for the sleeve. As a result the sleeve sits about 3” to 4” above my wrist, it’s longer than a ¾ sleeve, but shorter than a full long sleeve. Not perfect but it works , so I’m pleased with how it turned out.

I also shortened the sleeves

I Love It!

I just love this shirt and already have plans to make many more. It’s so easy and comfy and makes for a great summer to fall sewing transition.

Did I mention how much I love this shirt

Jennifer Lauren Handmade

This is the first time I’ve worked with a  Jennifer Lauren Handmade pattern and I thoroughly enjoyed the process.

Jen from Jennifer Lauren Handmade sells a variety of original patterns on Esty out of her home “a wee 1940’s blue house, in New Zealand”.  Her designs are simple with vintage flare and vary from tops to skirts to dresses.

I already plan to make more of this shirt

I want to thank Jen for sending me this pattern. I really enjoyed making it. While I do love the Gable top I now have my eye on her Cressida Skirt, I might get it as an early birthday present to myself (we shall see ).
